Weekend sightings 25th – 27th April

Remarkably the ocean settled down rather quickly post the massive south westerly wind that blasted through for 2 days.  We had great conditions over the long weekend with superb sightings.  Cathedral produced a 3.5m scalloped hammerhead shark that stayed with us for around 10 minutes.  This large, robust animal constantly used the entire water column above Cathedral to perform aerial maneuvres, clearly the surge and ocean conditions on the day held interest for this shark that just remained above us for this entire time.  A spectacular sighting for all.  On a S – N drift on the same dive, we encountered a pod of 7 bottlenose dolphins, totally unfazed at encountering us underwater, despite having 2 young with them, who were both incredibly playful within the pod.  A green turtle topped this dive off.

Our 2nd day and a dive with tiger sharks and blacktip sharks produced 2 tiger sharks, one female in particular held fascination with her size and attitude of knowing that she is the apex predator.  This animal came in and out throughout the entire 70 minute dive, whilst the 2nd tiger was slightly more shy in attitude.  We sighted 2 blacktip sharks, although hugely exciting for everyone, a rather unusual number for us locals when we usually sight at least 10 or so.  The balance of these sharks were clearly interested in another area on this day.  Whilst hovering at 10m or so on this dive, we sighted an impressive dorado (dolphinfish) skimming along the surface, adding to an amazing dive in its entirety.  A reef dive on this day produced 1 raggedtooth shark at Raggie Cave, along with brilliant shoals of fusiliers, mingled with red fang trigger fish & coachman.

Last day of diving on the long weekend produced many scorpionfish, nudibranches, bottlenose dolphins on the surface and a large shoal of orbicular batfish midwater.

Great diving was had by all during this time.
